WORLD NEWS TOMORROW – According to the Turkish armed forces command Turkey scrambled six F-16 fighter jets in three separate incidents near its border with Syria, after Syrian helicopters flew close to the border. Turkish officials said that there was no armed confrontation and no violation of the country’s territory.
The incident further strained the already tense relations between the two countries,while the Turkish government has announced that it had revised its military rules of engagement towards Syria and threat that any military element approaching the Turkish border from Syria would be considered as an enemy.
It was the second time -after last month’s incident when Syrian forces shot down a Turkish jet in the border area-Turkish jets were launched in response to Syrian helicopters flying near the border.Turkey has sent rocket launchers and anti-aircraft guns along the border with Syria in response to Syria’s action shooting down of a Turkish fighter jet.
Meanwhile, an international conference in Geneva on Saturday,accepted UN special envoy Kofi Annan’s plan for the creation of a transitional government, with Russia leaving the door open to Syria’s president being part of the interim procedure.
On the other hand, Syrian opposition groups have denied UN plan for a political transition in the country, saying that they can not negotiate with Assad, adding that the agreement reached in Geneva is a waste of time and of “no value on the ground”.
Veteran Syrian opposition figure Haitham Maleh said that the Syrian people are the ones who will decide the battle on the ground, not those sitting in Geneva or New York or anywhere else.
